Southland Posts Record February Gas Prices

(LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8, 2011) — Southland gas prices have set a new February record this month and are about seven cents higher than they were in January,  according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report.

The Southern California February average price for regular unleaded self-serve gasoline is $3.414, seven cents higher than the January average of $3.347, and 31 cents higher than the previous February Fuel Gauge record of $3.101 in 2008.

The statewide average price of $3.406 is six cents higher than the January average of $3.345 and 28 cents higher than the previous February Fuel Gauge record price average of $3.12 in 2008. Marysville in Northern California has the lowest average price in the state at $3.337, while Eureka once again has the highest gas price average at $3.623. The lowest-priced gas among surveyed Southern California cities is a tie between Van Nuys and Glendora at $3.358, and the highest Southland gas price average in the survey is Laguna Beach at $3.552.

Nationally, the February average price of $3.117 is three cents higher than the January average of $3.089. Hawaii once again has the most expensive gas in the country with a statewide average price of $3.738. Wyoming has the lowest state average price at $2.883.

“Southern California has gotten little relief from escalating gas prices for the last five months, not even now when pump prices traditionally drop before rising in the spring,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “To maximize fuel economy, drivers should make sure their tires are always properly inflated, avoid speeding, and adopt a gentle, even driving style.”
