Gas prices changed by less than a penny in most Southland areas over the past week, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail state average is $2.779 a gallon for regular today, six-tenths of a cent less than last Thursday.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $2.841 per gallon, which is eight-tenths of a cent higher than last week, six cents higher than last month, and 14 cents lower than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $2.817, which is four-tenths of one cent higher than last week, five cents higher than last month, and 11 cents less than this time last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $2.821, seven-tenths of a cent less than last week, two cents higher than a month ago, and 15 cents less than last year. In the Inland Empire, the average per-gallon price is $2.769, two-tenths of a cent less than last week, six cents more than last month, and 14 cents less than last year.

“We’re seeing a standstill in gas prices because while there seems to be no local fuel shortage, apparently there isn’t a surplus either,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring.  “Last year, local gas prices dropped at a pretty brisk pace from the end of August through the end of October. However, Southland drivers are now paying 10 to 15 cents per gallon less than they were at this time last year, even though prices are not dropping.”

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on Oct. 20, averages are:
