Gas prices moved by a penny or less in most areas over the last week as average prices inched closer to $3 a gallon for regular unleaded, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail state average is $2.903 a gallon for regular today, 1.3 cents more than last Thursday.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $2.989 per gallon, which is seven-tenths of a cent higher than last week, 14 cents higher than last month, and 60 cents higher than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $2.957, which is 1.1 cents higher than last week, 11 cents higher than last month, and 58 cents more than this time last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $2.987, seven-tenths of a penny more than last week, 11 cents higher than a month ago, and 64 cents higher than last year. In the Inland Empire, the average per-gallon price is $2.93, 1.8 cents more than last week, 13 cents more than this time last month, and 58 cents more than last year.

“Los Angeles wholesale fuel prices haven’t moved very much in nearly two weeks, indicating some stability in the market despite some unplanned refinery maintenance,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring.  “At this time last year, some local drivers were paying less than $2 a gallon because of an excess supply of winter blend gas, but this year supplies are much tighter.  We could see some average prices go over $3 a gallon in coming weeks.”
