Gas Prices Plummet For Two Straight Months

(LOS ANGELES, Sept. 9, 2008) — Gas prices dropped by a penny a day on average over the past month, bringing most local average prices below $4 a gallon, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report.

The Southern California September average price for regular self-serve gasoline fell 27 cents to $3.841 from the August average of $4.114, and 74 cents from the all-time monthly record high of $4.585 set in July. In September 2007, the monthly Fuel Gauge Report average for Southern California was $2.868 – 97 cents below the current monthly average.

The statewide average price of $3.852 is 26 cents lower than the August average of $4.109. The state’s lowest average price is in La Habra, where regular sells for $3.699. Tahoe City and Eureka in Northern California are tied for the highest price in the state at $4.299.

Nationally, the average price of $3.852 is up a nickel from the August average of $3.799. Alaska has the highest state average price at $4.413 and New Jersey has the lowest state average price, at $3.426.

“Concerns about hurricanes have pushed up prices in other parts of the country, but so far California has continued to experience steady price drops over the past month,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “With hurricanes still looming near the Gulf Coast, it remains to be seen whether the decreases will continue locally.”
