Gas prices began moving up at a slightly more robust pace over the past week but so far remain within about the same 10-cent range on average where they have hovered for the past three months in a row, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail state average is $2.845 a gallon for regular today, 3.1 cents more than last Thursday.
The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $2.879 per gallon, which is 4.3 cents higher than last week, three cents higher than last month, and 86 cents lower than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $2.855, which is 3.6 cents higher than last week, five cents higher than last month, and 84 cents less than this time last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $2.887, 2.8 cents more than last week, 2.5 cents higher than a month ago, and 81 cents less than last year. In the Inland Empire, the average per-gallon price is $2.828, 3.2 cents more than last week, one cent more than last month, and 85 cents less than last year.
“Reportedly this week's local price increases may be due to unplanned maintenance at a few local refineries and a shutdown at a Washington refinery that sometimes supplies California , and imports from Asian refineries are expected to increase to fill the gap,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. “We could see more price bumps in coming days if supplies are not adequate to meet high summer demand.”
