Record January Gas Prices Continue at Plateaus

(LOS ANGELES – Jan. 27, 2011) – Local pump prices moved very slightly downward in most Southern California areas over the past week but remain at higher levels in most cities than during any previous January, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Weekend Gas Watch.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.352 per gallon, which is two-tenths of a cent less than last week, six cents higher than last month, and 32 cents higher than last year. In San Diego, the price is $3.345, four-tenths of a cent less than last week, three cents above last month, and 32 cents higher than last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.387, down half a cent from last week, four cents higher than a month ago, and 30 cents above last year. In the Inland Empire, the average per gallon price is $3.331, which is four-tenths of a cent lower than last week, three cents higher than last month, and 32 cents more than last year.
“There are now only 10 states with gas price averages under $3 a gallon, so Southern California is not alone in feeling pain at the pump,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “The only other year when January prices were close to this high level was 2008, and on this date in 2008 they were almost 20 cents lower in most areas than they are today.”
The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 11 a.m. on Jan.27, averages are:
