OC Teen Fair Kicks Off Red Ribbon Week

RADD’S Rock ‘N Road OC celebration, set for Saturday, Oct. 19 in Mission Viejo, will kick off National Red Ribbon Week in Orange County and include teen driver safety activities from the Automobile Club of Southern California.

Thousands of middle and high school teens and their families are expected from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community Center, 24932 Veteran’s Way.  The event is open to the public and admission is free.

RADD is the entertainment industry’s arm for road safety. The group says it empowers businesses, celebrities, media partners and other supporters to create positive attitudes towards road safety and to promote risk-intervention strategies to avoid driving while impaired.  The group’s annual Rock ‘n Road OC event features a battle of the bands, a battle of the banners and other activities to promote a drug-free lifestyle.

The Auto Club’s teen driver safety booth and staff will host teen driver safety activities with DUI “fatal vision goggles” and distracted driving exercises to help them understand the risks and dangers in their early years of driving, according to Anita Lorz, the Auto Club’s manager of community affairs and traffic safety programs.  Motor vehicle crashes remain the number one killer of teen drivers across the nation, she added.

The Auto Club also will be showing teens how to correctly “fit” into their vehicle with their state-certified Auto Club Driving School instructors.

The official National Red Week observance will begin Wednesday, Oct. 23 through Thursday, Oct. 31. This year’s theme is “A Healthy Me is Drug Free®”.  National Red Ribbon Week was established in the 1980s by parents who sought to play a leadership role in drug prevention.

The Red Ribbon Week kick-off observance also coincides with the kick off of National Teen Driver Safety Week, Oct. 20-26. More information about teen driving and requirements of the state’s Graduated Driver License law requirements can be found at www.TeenDriving.AAA.com
