New May Record for Southland Gas Prices Despite Recent Drops

(LOS ANGELES, May 10, 2011) —Although Southern California gas prices have dropped over the last few days, they still posted a net increase from April to May, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report.

The Southern California May average price for regular unleaded self-serve gasoline is $4.281, nearly a dime higher than the April average of $4.184, and $1.13 higher than last year’s May Fuel Gauge price of $3.151.

The statewide average price of $4.261 is nine cents higher than the April average of $4.17 and $1.11 higher than last year’s May Fuel Gauge statewide price average of $3.153. The lowest-priced gas in California can be found in Marysville, with an average of $4.138, while the surveyed California city with the highest price is Eureka at $4.435. Among surveyed Southern California cities, the lowest price average can be found in Chula Vista at $4.195, and the highest gas price average is in Laguna Beach at $4.412.
 
Nationally, the May average price of $3.951 is 16 cents higher than the April average of $3.791. Hawaii has the highest average price among U.S.states at $4.567. Wyoming has the lowest state average price at $3.641.  

“While prices have stopped climbing and are even dropping slightly for now, the Southern California average price is 35 cents higher than the previous all-time May record price of $3.928 set in 2008,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “The only two months with higher average gas prices were in June 2008, when the Southern California average was $4.47, and July 2008, when the average was $4.585.”
