Southern California gas prices dropped for the third straight week as an all-time record number of local residents get ready to travel over the Independence Day holiday, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail statewide average is $2.98 a gallon for regular unleaded, five cents less a week ago.
The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $2.97 per gallon, which is four cents below last week, eight cents below last month, and five cents higher than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $2.95, which is three cents lower than last week, seven cents less than last month, and six cents more than this time last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.03, two cents less than last week, two cents lower than last month, and 10 cents higher than last year. In the Inland Empire, the average per-gallon price is $2.92, which is down four cents from last week, eight cents less than last month, and seven cents more than last year.
“A record 3.1 million Southern Californians are expected to travel over the Fourth of July, and they will likely be paying about the same to gas up as they did at this time last year,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. “This means that summer travelers will enjoy the lowest gas prices for the Independence Day holiday since 2009. Gas prices are falling around the country as well, with today’s national average price at $2.28 a gallon for regular unleaded.”
