(LOS ANGELES – March 3, 2011) – Southern Californians are now paying almost the same at the pump for gas as motorists in Hawaii after a run-up of more than 20 cents in most local areas over the past week, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Weekend Gas Watch.
The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.821 per gallon, which is 21.7 cents more than last week, 45 cents higher than last month, and 81 cents higher than last year. In San Diego, the price is $3.835, 21.7 cents more than last week, 47 cents above last month, and 82 cents higher than last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.839, up 19.9 cents from last week, 42 cents higher than a month ago, and 77 cents above last year. In the Inland Empire, the average per gallon price is $3.796, which is 21.6 cents higher than last week, 45 cents higher than last month, and 79 cents more than last year.

“As we get closer to the $4 a gallon mark, it’s interesting to note that average prices are becoming much closer between all the cities in California, even though there is usually at least a 15-cent gap in average prices between the lowest and highest-priced areas,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “California’s average statewide gas price today is $3.812, almost identical to Hawaii’s $3.816 average, which is the highest average price in the U.S. Alaska’s average gas price today is $3.768. California prices have usually been much lower than Alaska and Hawaii gas prices for the last few years.”
