Gas Prices Ratchet Up, Create New November Records

(LOS ANGELES, Nov. 8, 2011) —Southern California gas prices continue to pinch pocketbooks, rising about a nickel from last month and setting a new all-time record for the month of November, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California’s monthly Fuel Gauge Report.

The Southern California November average price for regular unleaded self-serve gasoline is $3.873, five cents higher than the October average of $3.824 and 75 cents higher than last year’s November Fuel Gauge price of $3.127. The previous record Southern California November monthly price was $3.355, set in 2007.

The statewide average price of $3.842 is four cents higher than the October average of $3.806 and 70 cents higher than last year’s November Fuel Gauge statewide price average of $3.142. Among surveyed cities statewide, Marysville has the lowest price average at $3.715 and Blythe has the highest average at $3.996. In Southern California, the lowest price average can be found in Hemet at $3.787.

Nationally, the November average price of $3.414 is two cents higher than the October average of $3.396. Hawaii continues to have the highest average price among U.S. states at $4.169. Missouri has the lowest state average price at $3.171.

“Demand for gasoline in Southern California remains low, but prices remain high because international fuel demand has risen and local refineries are exporting to South America,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “At this rate, we may begin the new year, which is the typical low point for gas prices, with pump costs that are 50 to 60 cents higher than last January.”

Note:  December will be the last monthly Fuel Gauge Report from the Auto Club. Reporters and consumers can continue to find daily, weekly and monthly updated prices for larger geographic areas on FuelGaugeReport.aaa.com. The Auto Club will continue to publish its weekly Weekend Gas Watch.
