Heading into a busy Memorial Day weekend for travel, gas prices continued moving up a bit throughout most regions of Southern California, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Weekend Gas Watch. Today’s retail statewide average is $4.18 a gallon for regular unleaded, which is three cents higher than last week.
The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $4.20 per gallon, which is two cents higher than last week, 16 cents higher than last month, and $1.27 higher than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $4.17, which is one cent higher than last week, 13 cents more than than last month, and $1.27 higher than last year.
On the Central Coast, the average price is $4.15, which is the same as last week, 13 cents higher than last month, and $1.18 higher than last year. In Riverside, the average per-gallon price is $4.11, which is two cents higher than last week, 13 cents higher than last month, and $1.28 higher than last year. In Bakersfield, the $4.06 average price is two cents higher than last week, 17 cents higher than last month, and $1.37 higher than a year ago today.
“The last time gas price averages climbed this high in Southern California was in October 2019, but the last time that we paid prices at this level over Memorial Day weekend was in 2014,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. “However, Memorial Day car travelers have a lot of flexibility in their budgets to make up for that increased cost, such as bringing food for the road, eating at less expensive restaurants or shortening their trip.”
