Over the past week, Southland gas price averages have moved below $4 a gallon for the first time in more than four months in most regions, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The state average price today is $3.978 a gallon for regular, 4.5 cents less than last week.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.989 per gallon, which is 4.9 cents less than last week, 18 cents less than last month, and 6 cents lower than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $3.949, which is 5.6 cents less than last week, 19 cents lower than last month, and 8 cents lower than last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $4.055, 2.8 cents less than last week, 12 cents lower than a month ago, and 5 cents less than last year. In the Inland Empire, the average per-gallon price is $3.959, down 5.8 cents from last week, 17 cents less than last month, and 6 cents less than last year.

“Oil industry analysts predicted that drivers would pay less in 2014 for fuel than in 2013, but nearly 20 weeks of $4-plus price averages in Southern California have pushed the year-to-date price averages to $4.019 for Los Angeles and $3.995 for San Diego,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. “That’s about eight cents higher than 2013 annual averages.”

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on July 31, averages are:
