Monthly Gas Prices Drop Nearly 50 Cents

(LOS ANGELES, August 12, 2008) — For the first time in the past six months, the average monthly price of gasoline declined, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report.

The Southern California August average price for regular self-serve gasoline fell 47 cents to $4.114 – down from $4.585 on July 8, which was the all-time Southern California monthly record price. In August 2007, the monthly Fuel Gauge Report average for Southern California was $2.912 – $1.20 less than this month’s average price.

The statewide average price of $4.109 is down 45 cents from the July average price of $4.559. The state’s lowest average price is in Tracy in northern California, where regular sells for $3.90. Tahoe City has the state’s highest price at $4.50.

Nationally, the average price is $3.799 down about 31 cents from $4.108, in July. Alaska has the highest state average price at $4.622 and Missouri has the lowest state average price, at $3.553. Only ten states now have an average price over $4 per gallon for regular.

“For the first time in six months, consumers get a monthly average price that is lower than the previous month,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “Lower demand for gasoline has finally pushed investors away from oil and gasoline. Even Russia’s incursion into Georgia, the site of a major oil pipleline, hasn’t sparked an oil price increase.”
In Southern California, the averages for regular and premium grades of gasoline are listed below:
