Auto Club: Continued Gas Price Increases For Second Month

(LOS ANGELES, Feb. 10, 2009) — For the second straight month, Southern California gas prices posted increases, settling into a familiar pattern seen in previous years during the late winter months, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report.

The Southern California February average price for regular self-serve gasoline rose nearly 23 cents to $2.217 from the January average of $1.991. The current monthly average is less than half of the all-time monthly record price of $4.585 set in July. In February 2008, the monthly Fuel Gauge Report average for Southern California was $3.101 – 88 cents higher than the current monthly average.

The statewide average price of $2.226 is 21 cents higher than the January average of $2.012. The state’s lowest average price is in Anaheim, where regular sells for $2.14. Tahoe City has the highest price average in the state at $2.519.

Nationally, the average price of $1.928 rose by 14 cents from the January average of $1.79. Alaska has the highest state average price at $2.517, and Wyoming has the lowest state average price, at $1.642. Eleven U.S. states have price averages higher than $2 a gallon.

“Prices do normally rise during this time of year in California as refineries prepare to switch over to producing California’s ‘summer’ blend of gasoline that is mandated by air quality requirements ,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring.
In Southern California, the averages for regular and premium grades of gasoline are listed below:
