John Boyle, President & CEO of the Automobile Club of Southern California and Auto Club Enterprises, has retired after serving 35 years with the organization and seven years as President & CEO, the organization announced today. He is succeeded by Greg Backley, who previously served as the Auto Club’s Chief Operating Officer.

Boyle joined the Auto Club as Controller and held increasingly responsible positions, including Senior Vice President, Treasurer, Chief Financial Officer, Executive Vice President, and President & Chief Operating Officer.  Boyle directed the Auto Club’s affiliated insurance operation as well as the Club’s finance and administrative functions before heading Auto Club Enterprises, which operates AAA clubs in part or all of 21 states – including the Automobile Club of Southern California – serving nearly 18 million members.

Under Boyle’s leadership as President & CEO, Auto Club Enterprises experienced significant growth of three million members while increasing its financial stability. It is the largest club in the AAA federation, operating the 11th largest auto insurance company and the 17th largest home insurer in the U.S., according to A.M. Best.

Boyle was also part of the leadership team that spearheaded the Auto Club’s creation of Auto Club Enterprises, starting with the acquisition of AAA clubs in Texas, New Mexico, and Hawaii in 1996.

Boyle will continue to serve as a member of the organization’s Board of Directors.

The Auto Club’s new President & CEO, Greg Backley, has served the organization for 33 years. He began his career in 1991 as a membership and insurance sales agent and has held leadership positions of increasing responsibility in product, sales, and call center management at the Auto Club.  Backley was promoted to Vice President of Insurance Product Management in 2008 and Senior Vice President of Insurance Operations in 2018. In 2022, he became Executive Vice President, Insurance Operations and in 2023 was promoted to Chief Operating Officer.

“Greg has a deep and broad understanding of the organization,” Boyle said. “He has played an integral role in many of the major initiatives contributing to our long-term success, and his leadership will continue to make the organization better and stronger in the future.”
