Editors note: The Weekend Gas Watch is being published a day early due to the holiday.
Gas prices throughout Southern California ticked up in response to the 5.6-cent state gas tax increase levied on Monday, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail statewide average is $3.78 a gallon for regular unleaded, which is four cents higher than last week.
The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.81 per gallon, which is eight cents higher than last week, 12 cents lower than last month, and 14 cents higher than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $3.77, which is six cents above last Wednesday, 18 cents below last month, and 11 cents higher than this time last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.85, which is two cents more than last week, 16 cents lower than last month, and ten cents higher than last year. In Riverside, the average per-gallon price is $3.69, which is five cents higher than last week, 18 cents lower than last month, and eight cents higher than last year. In San Bernardino, the $3.73 average price is four cents higher than last Wednesday, 18 cents lower than last month, and nine cents higher than a year ago today.
“Just as an all-time record 3.5 million Southern Californians headed out of town for holiday travels, the increased gas tax boosted their fill-up cost by more than 75 cents on average,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. "We are recommending that drivers shop around for the lowest priced TOP TIER fuel they can find, and that they take advantage of discounts such as the new Shell discount for AAA members available once members sign up at AAA.com/Shell. They will save 15 cents a gallon on their first three fill-ups, and at least five cents a gallon after that.”
