(LOS ANGELES, Feb. 9, 2010) —Southern California gas prices dropped back almost to the levels of two months ago and now a majority of local cities have price averages below $3 a gallon, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report.
The Southern California February average price for regular self-serve gasoline is $2.986, nine cents lower than the January average of $3.077. This month’s average price is 77 cents higher than last year’s February price average of $2.217.
The statewide average price of $2.961 is 10 cents lower than the January average of $3.066. Both the lowest and highest state average prices are in Northern California: Tracy has the lowest average price at $2.825, while Tahoe City has the highest gas price average at $3.299. In central and Southern California, the cheapest gas is in Glendora, with an average price of $2.909, and Manhattan Beach has the most expensive gas at an average price of $3.105.

Nationally, the February average price of $2.644 is 11 cents lower than the January average of $2.751. Hawaii has surpassed Alaska as the state with the most expensive gas in the country with an average price of $3.43. Missouri has the lowest state average price at $2.422.
“We typically experience a decline in gas prices over the winter months and the decline over the past month has mostly erased the unusual price increase we saw between December and January,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “However, Southern California drivers continue to pay the second-highest gas prices ever recorded during the month of February. The February record was set in 2008, when the Southland gas price average was $3.10 a gallon.”
