Auto Club: Monthly Gas Price Average Drifts Down Nearly 12 Cents

(LOS ANGELES, June 13, 2006) —The average price of a gallon of gasoline in Southern California floated down 11.7 cents from May to June, the first month to month decline since December 2005, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report.

The Southern California June average price for regular self-serve gasoline is $3.301, down from a record setting $3.417 on May 16. December 20, 2005 marked the lowest monthly gas price average — $2.289 – before prices rose for five months in a row. This followed record prices in the fall of 2005 due to hurricanes Katrina and Wilma.

“While it’s a relief that prices are dropping, they are still more than a dollar higher than December,” said Auto Club spokesperson Carol Thorp. “Oil prices continue to yo-yo up and down around the $70 per barrel range, and will probably continue that way during hurricane season. It’s difficult to say which way gasoline prices will go from day to day.”

Statewide, the average price for June is $3.262, down from $3.378 in May, which was the all-time record high. The prior record of $3.054 was set on Sept. 9, 2005. The lowest average price in the state is in Pleasanton, where regular is selling for $3.100. Blythe reports the state’s highest average price at $3.506.

Nationally, the average price is $2.899, down from $2.943 in May. The state with the highest gas price average is Hawaii at $3.386. Oklahoma has the lowest average price of $2.687.
