Auto Club: Gas Prices Tumble Slowly Over Past Month

(LOS ANGELES, May 17, 2005) — Southern California's average price for regular gasoline has declined 11 cents during the past month, falling from record high prices set in April, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report.

The Southern California May average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline is $2.532, which compares to an April 12 average of 2.642. Statewide, the average price for May is $2.531, down from $2.630 in April.

"Oil prices have fallen about 14 percent in recent weeks, so we would expect that gas prices would follow," said Auto Club spokeswoman Carol Thorp. "If oil prices remain stable at these lower levels, then summer travelers might expect to pay less at the pump than they are now. The question remains whether prices will fall to last year's levels."

The lowest average price in California is in Marysville, where regular is selling for $2.321. Blythe reported the state's highest average price at $2.716. Nationally, the average price is $2.160, down from $2.266 in April.
