Spring Has Sprung, And So Have Gas Prices, Says Auto Club

(LOS ANGELES, April 9, 2009) Local gas prices vaulted by more than a penny a day in most areas as Southern California experienced its third straight week of price increases, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Weekend Gas Watch.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $2.330 per gallon, which is 8.8 cents more than last week, 14 cents higher than last month, and $1.40 less than last year. In San Diego, the price is $2.360, which is eight cents more than last week’s price, 16 cents above last month, and $1.40 lower than last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $2.426, up 8.2 cents from last week, 13 cents above last month, and $1.42 below last year. In the Inland Empire, the average per gallon price is $2.318, which is 7.4 cents higher than last week, 14 cents more than last month, and $1.41 less than last year.

“Gas prices are increasing for the usual reasons at this time of year,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “California is more susceptible than many other states to supply glitches because the summer blend of fuel we use is not widely available, so our price increases during the spring are often steeper than in other areas of the country.”

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline as of 1 p.m. on April 9.
