Auto Club: Steep Increase Brings More Budget-Busting Gas Prices

(LOS ANGELES, May 30, 2008) Four-dollar regular unleaded gas prices became the norm this week throughout Southern California after a run-up of more than 15 cents in most areas, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $4.112 per gallon, which is 15.3 cents more than last week, 23 cents higher than last month, and 71 cents above last year. In San Diego, the price is $4.165, which is 15.6 cents higher than last week's price, 23 cents above last month, and 76 cents higher than last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $4.232, up 12.3 cents from last week, 23 cents above last month, and 66 cents more than last year. In the Inland Empire, the average per gallon price is $4.134, 16.6 cents over last week, up 23 cents from last month, and 74 cents higher than last year.

"Prices jumped by 10 cents over the Memorial Day weekend in most local areas," said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. "Without a plummet in our record crude oil prices, it's hard to know when motorists will get any relief at the pump."

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline as of 12:01 a.m., May 30:
