Local Gas Prices In Freefall Going Into Holiday

As millions of Southern Californians get ready to hit the road to celebrate the holidays, gas prices are falling by 2 cents per day or more and giving drivers another holiday gift of extra cash, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail state average is $2.803 a gallon for regular today, 13.1 cents less than last week.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $2.833 per gallon, which is 13.5 cents less than last week, 35 cents less than last month, and 81 cents lower than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $2.805, which is 13 cents less than last week, 35 cents lower than last month, and 83 cents lower than last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $2.878, 12.3 cents less than last week, 33 cents lower than a month ago, and 81 cents less than last year. In the Inland Empire, the average per-gallon price is $2.786, down 14.8 cents from last week, 35 cents less than last month, and 82.5 cents less than last year.

“The Auto Club is projecting an all-time record number of Southern California travelers over this Christmas-New Year’s holiday period, and although lower gas prices aren’t the main reason for increased travel, it’s certainly a factor and a welcome surprise for travelers,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. “Oil prices have continued to plunge and local refineries appear to be maximizing production, so we expect price declines to last at least through the end of the year.”
