Gas Prices Soar 50 Cents in One Month

(LOS ANGELES, March 8, 2011) —Gas prices have posted one of their biggest one-month jumps in history, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report.

The Southern California March average price for regular unleaded self-serve gasoline is $3.917, 50.3 cents higher than the February average of $3.414, and 84 cents higher than last year’s March Fuel Gauge price of $3.073.

The statewide average price of $3.908 is 50.2 cents higher than the February average of $3.406 and 83 cents higher than last year’s March Fuel Gauge statewide price average of $3.07. Redding in Northern California has the lowest average price in the state at $3.825, while Eureka once again has the highest gas price average at $4.059. The lowest-priced gas among surveyed Southern California cities is in La Habra at $3.84, and the surveyed Southland cities with gas price averages above $4 a gallon are Laguna Beach at $4.002 and Del Mar at $4.015.

Nationally, the March average price of $3.517 is 40 cents higher than the February average of $3.117. California’s $3.908 average price now exceeds both Hawaii’s average of $3.896 and Alaska’s average of $3.845 and is the most expensive state for gas in the U.S. Wyoming has the lowest state average price at $3.197.

“Tom Kloza from Oil Price Information Service indicated today that 10 to 15 cents of California’s gas price increase is the result of the state’s annual switchover from the winter blend to summer blend of gasoline, while a few more cents of the increase could be tied to a few local refinery production issues,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “The rest of the price increase in this last month is very similar to that experienced in the rest of the country.”
