Gas Prices Pause At Low Point Before Holiday

Southern California gas price averages reached their lowest level of 2013 in the past week and have stayed within about a penny of that average in recent days as holiday travelers fill up for their trips, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The state average is $3.566 a gallon for regular today – three-tenths of one cent higher than last Wednesday.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.599 per gallon, which is nine-tenths of one cent more than last week, 15 cents lower than last month, and 20 cents lower than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $3.604, which is one-tenth of one cent below last week, 14 cents below last month, and 17 cents lower than last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.635, up 1.3 cents from last week, 15 cents lower than a month ago, and 21 cents less than last year. In the Inland Empire, the average per-gallon price is $3.572, up seven-tenths of one cent from last week, 14 cents lower than last month, and 20 cents less than last year.

“Gas price averages reached their 2013 low point last Friday in many areas, with a Los Angeles average of $3.582 on that day and a San Diego average price of $3.596,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “Despite the slight uptick of about a penny from that level, Thanksgiving travelers will still be paying less for gas than they did during the 2011 and 2012 holidays. However, news of some local refinery work has increased wholesale prices by about 15 cents in the last 10 days, indicating some possible future price increases at the pump."

The Auto Club is projecting that 3.22 million Southern Californians are making holiday getaways this weekend, with 86 percent of them, or 2.77 million, going by car. The most popular destinations for local travelers are within a four-hour drive of their homes.

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. Because of the holiday, this week's report compares prices between Wednesday, Nov. 20 and Wednesday, Nov. 27. As of 9 a.m. on Nov. 27, averages are:
