Southern California gas prices briefly seemed to be reversing course and heading upward because of concerns about refinery issues in Northern California, but ended up dropping slightly for the week, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail statewide average is $3.68 a gallon for regular unleaded, which is two cents lower than last week.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.70 per gallon, which is one cent lower than last week, seven cents lower than last month, and six cents higher than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $3.67, which is two cents lower than last Thursday, seven cents below last month, and five cents higher than this time last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.75, which is three cents less than last week, seven cents lower than last month, and four cents higher than last year. In Riverside, the average per-gallon price is $3.60, which is one cent lower than last week, five cents lower than last month, and five cents higher than last year. In San Bernardino, the $3.64 average price is two cents lower than last Thursday, six cents lower than last month, and seven cents higher than a year ago today.

"Concerns about flaring at the Chevron refinery in Richmond last week briefly pushed up local wholesale gasoline prices, but they headed back down this week as it became clear there is plenty of supply,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring.

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on Aug. 1, averages are:
