Gas Prices Begin Rising Again As Holiday Nears

After a few weeks of small reductions, gas prices reversed course and moved upward ahead of the Memorial Day travel holiday, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail statewide average is $3.01 a gallon for regular unleaded, four cents higher than a week ago.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.03 per gallon, which is three cents higher than last week, one cent lower than last month, and 20 cents higher than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $2.99, which is one cent higher than last week, four cents lower than last month, and 19 cents more than this time last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.05, unchanged from last Thursday’s latest average, five cents lower than a month ago, and 20 cents higher than last year. In Riverside, the average per-gallon price is $2.98, two cents more than last week, two cents less than this time last month, and 19 cents more than last year.

“A Northern California refinery is reportedly having some issues restarting after a power outage earlier this month, and gas price averages in Northern California markets moved up by two or three cents from Wednesday to Thursday,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring.  “So far, Southern California gas prices are not reacting similarly, although they are rising slowly. That’s because generally speaking, California refineries sell their fuel to local markets and not statewide.”

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on May 18, averages are:
