Southern California gas prices have leveled off in the past week in many parts of the region after reaching the second highest price average for June last week, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Weekend Gas Watch. Today’s retail statewide average rose only a half-penny to $4.23 a gallon for regular unleaded.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $4.25 per gallon, which is unchanged from last week, eight cents higher than last month, and $1.22 higher than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $4.22, which is unchanged from last week, seven cents more than last month, and $1.19 higher than last year.

On the Central Coast, the average price is $4.22, which is one cent higher than last week, nine cents higher than last month, and $1.16 higher than last year.  In Riverside, the average per-gallon price is $4.18, which is one cent higher than last week, nine cents higher than last month, and $1.19 higher than last year. In Bakersfield, the $4.13 average price is two cents higher than last week, nine cents higher than last month, and $1.20 higher than a year ago today.

“We’ve seen at least a pause in most gas price averages due to more imported fuel, more local refineries producing gasoline at slightly higher levels and dropping oil prices,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. “While prices remain this high, the Auto Club recommends motorists try fuel conservation tactics such as combining errands, taking unneeded weight out of the vehicle and using the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the family when possible.”

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on June 17, averages are:
