Editors Note: Weekend Gas Watch is being published a day early due to the holiday.

Travelers filling up before their holiday getaways today will pay about 40 cents per gallon less than they did five weeks ago, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail statewide average is $3.84 a gallon for regular unleaded, which is nine cents lower than last week.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.87 per gallon, which is down ten cents from last week, 22 cents lower than a month ago, and 25 cents higher than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $3.86, which is eight cents less than last week, 17 cents less than last month, and 27 cents higher than last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.94, which is ten cents lower than last week, 20 cents lower than last month, and 32 cents higher than last year. In Riverside, the average per-gallon price is $3.78, which is ten cents lower than last week, 24 cents lower than last month, and 25 cents higher than last year. In San Bernardino, the $3.85 average price is eight cents lower than last week, 19 cents lower than last month, and 27 cents higher than a year ago today.

“The 3.7 million Southern Californians who will be driving to their destinations, as well as all those who will stay home and do some holiday shopping this weekend, will pay the lowest gas prices at many of the ‘big box’ stores that offer fuel and are competing with each other for customers,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. “We urge travelers to constantly monitor weather conditions and road closures this weekend due to rain and snow.”

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on Nov. 27, averages are:
