Los Angeles drivers are now paying slightly less for gasoline than a year ago at this time after six straight weeks of price drops, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail statewide average is $3.61 a gallon for regular unleaded, which is five cents lower than last week.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.60 per gallon, which is six cents lower than last week, 17 cents lower than last month, and two cents lower than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $3.61, which is four cents lower than last Thursday, 13 cents below last month, and two cents higher than this time last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.70, which is three cents less than last week, 13 cents lower than last month, and one cent lower than last year. In Riverside, the average per-gallon price is $3.53, which is four cents lower than last week, 14 cents lower than last month, and two cents higher than last year. In San Bernardino, the $3.58 average price is four cents lower than last Thursday, 13 cents lower than last month, and five cents higher than a year ago today.

"The California Energy Commission reported yesterday that local refineries have cut back California-blend gasoline production and are dipping into their inventories to meet demand,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. “We’ll see in the next week if that action slows down price decreases at the pump.”

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on Aug. 15, averages are:
