Auto Club: Labor Day Travelers Spend Less On Gas

As drivers head out for the last three-day weekend of the summer, they will fill up at prices that are slightly lower than last year at this time, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail statewide average is $3.57 a gallon for regular unleaded, which is one cent lower than last week.
 
The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.57 per gallon, which is one cent lower than last week, 13 cents lower than last month, and six cents lower than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $3.57, which is two cents lower than last Thursday, 11 cents below last month, and four cents less than last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.69, which is the same price as last week, seven cents lower than last month, and one cent lower than last year. In Riverside, the average per-gallon price is $3.49, which is two cents lower than last week, 12 cents lower than last month, and three cents lower than last year. In San Bernardino, the $3.54 average price is one cent lower than last Thursday, 11 cents lower than last month, and one cent lower than a year ago today.

"Labor Day weekend travelers will benefit from two months of declining gas prices, although price declines have been very small over the last couple of weeks,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. “Heading into the fall, we expect prices to continue declining as demand drops off from the peak summer travel period, providing there are no local supply issues.”

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on Aug. 29, averages are:
