Southern California gas prices continued upward in the last week, but underlying price pressures may soon ease enough to reverse that course, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail statewide average is $3.70 a gallon for regular unleaded, four cents higher than last Thursday.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.75 per gallon, which is four cents more than last week, an increase of 15 cents from last month, and 72 cents higher than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $3.73, which is four cents more than last Thursday, 15 cents more than last month, and 74 cents higher than this time last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.76, which is three cents higher than last week, 15 cents higher than last month, and 70 cents higher than last year. In Riverside, the average per-gallon price is $3.67, which is three cents more than last week, 14 cents higher than last month, and 71 cents more than at this time last year.

“Los Angeles wholesale gasoline prices reached a one-year peak briefly last week, but quickly dropped as it became clear that Southern California gasoline supplies are in good shape for the upcoming summer driving season at the moment,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. “The summer travel season is expected to kick off next week with a hefty all-time record number of 3.21 million Southern Californians taking Memorial Day weekend trips.”

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on May 17, averages are:
