Southern California gas prices continued climbing this week on news that local refineries may have underestimated summer-blend gasoline demand, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch. The retail statewide average is $3.62 a gallon for regular unleaded, which is two cents higher than last week.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.67 per gallon, which is three cents higher than last week, three cents higher than last month, and 49 cents higher than last year. In San Diego, the average price is $3.63, three cents higher than last Thursday, two cents higher than last month, and 49 cents higher than this time last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.70, which is a penny higher than last week, two cents lower than last month, and 53 cents higher than last year. In Riverside, the average per-gallon price is $3.55, which is three cents higher than last week, one cent higher than last month, and 45 cents more than at this time last year.

“Oil Price Information Service reported that some Southern California refineries may have already switched to producing winter-blend gasoline, which cannot be sold locally until Nov, 1, and these refiners underestimated how much summer-blend gasoline they would need to last through the end of October,” said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. “At the moment, it does not appear to be a serious problem, but it has pushed up prices slightly.”

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline. As of 9 a.m. on Sept. 6, averages are:
