2009 Auto Club Calendar Celebrates Westways Magazine's 100th Anniversdary

Corporate Information
Calendar Features Vintage Paintings of Classic California Scenes

(LOS ANGELES, Nov. 12, 2008) -- The Automobile Club of Southern California has released a calendar for 2009 that commemorates and showcases the 100th publishing anniversary of the Auto Club's member magazine, Westways.

The Westways Centennial Calendar is an affordable gift and available, in limited quantities, at Auto Club offices. The calendar features the works of the artists who originally were commissioned by Westways Editors, particularly Phil Hanna, to paint early magazine covers and editorial art prior to the magazine shifting to cover photography. Many of the region's notable artists created work for the cover: Maynard Dixon, Alson Clark and John Frost; among others in the California watercolor movement, including painters Phil Dike, Rex Brandt, Maurice Logan and Millard Sheets.

"The Auto Club's Westways Centennial Calendar provides a look into scenes from California's colorful history and would be a treat for anyone who's interested in California history, art and unique places," said Matt Roth, Auto Club Historian. "The calendar is filled with beautiful painted scenes for outdoors enthusiasts and California art buffs and is representative of the more than 200 art pieces in the Westways collection."

The Auto Club's wall calendar depicts a different scene each month:
  • August depicts Ren Wicks, Family Beach Scene, from 1952. Howard Hughes hired Wicks in 1943 to provide poster illustration for one of the more scandalous movies of the day, The Outlaw, starring Jane Russell.
  • November 2009 depicts Merle Shore's Mountain Hikers, from 1961. Shore worked as an art director in the music industry, creating numerous album covers for performers like Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Witherspoon and Dean Martin.
  • December 2009 depicts J. Gordon Legg's, Mt. Tom, from 1949. Legg worked as an art director and illustrator for animated feature films, including the seminal Disney movies, Fantasia and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
"We're honored to carry on the tradition of great travel journalism, as depicted in these historic Westways covers," said magazine publisher Tamara Hill. "This is a beautiful calendar that Auto Club members are sure to enjoy."

Descriptions also are included on the calendar. The price for Auto Club members is $8.95.
