14 Weeks Of Price Drops - Longest Gas Price Downturn Since 2001

(LOS ANGELES, Sept. 26, 2008)After 14 straight weeks, Southern California is in its longest stretch of gas price declines since the period just after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Weekend Gas Watch.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.656 per gallon, which is 8.8 cents less than last week, 27 cents lower than last month, and .69 above last year. In San Diego, the price is $3.657, which is 8.7 cents under last week’s price, 23 cents below last month, and .67 higher than last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.743, down 10.9 cents from last week, 30 cents below last month, and .63 more than last year. In the Inland Empire, the average per gallon price is $3.647, which is 7.4 cents under last week, down 25 cents from last month, and .68 higher than last year.

“After 9/11, Southern California experienced 16 straight weeks of price drops to averages below $1 a gallon,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “At the current rate, it would take many more than 16 weeks for local averages to drop to $3 a gallon. However, California gas prices right now are below the price averages in 20 other states because of problems associated with post-Hurricane Ike fuel supplies.”

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline as of 12:01 a.m. Sept. 26:
