Monthly Gas Prices Plunge, Says Auto Club

(LOS ANGELES, Feb. 12, 2008) - The average monthly Southern California gas price dropped rapidly over the past month, with a few Southland cities posting averages below $3 a gallon, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report.

The Southern California February average price for regular self-serve gasoline is $3.101, down 25 cents from $3.357 on Jan. 8. At this time last year, the average Southern California price was $2.648 - 45 cents lower than today.

California's state average price of $3.12 a gallon is the fifth highest in the nation behind Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii and New York. The California average price is 23 cents lower than the January average price.

The state's lowest average price is in La Habra, where regular sells for $2.895. Eureka has the state's highest average price - $3.419.

Nationally, the average price is $2.961, down 14 cents from January. Missouri has the lowest state average price, at $2.792.

"California's average price is just 16 cents higher than the national average, and most state averages are between $2.85 and $3.05 a gallon, so there is a lot of similarity in the prices being paid around the country," said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring.
